Playing against the house and intentionally giving them an edge of over 6% is nuts. You would make a bet like this if you were way ahead on this particular session of craps. Or if you find after playing craps that for some reason you tend to throw a 4 or a 10 a lot.
A place bet on 5 or 9 pays 7-5 The house edge is 4%.
Even a 4% edge is way too much to give away. Sure, you get back seven dollars for every five dollar bill that you plunk down on a 5 or 9 place bet but to try and chip away at the edge is to hard for a craps player who wants to have fun and make money.
A place bet on 6 or 8 pays 7-6 The house edge is about 1.5%
Since the 6 and 8 have a lot more combinations that can come up on a pair of dice, almost as many as a 7, this is a far better bet and takes the impatient edge off. You should bet in multiples of 6 to take full advantage of the odds. Bet $6, $12, $18 and so on. When you hit the 6 or 8 the dealer will pay you seven dollars on a six dollar bet. he will leave the original bet in place. You can at any time request your place bet back or ask him to turn them, "Off". He will leave your money on the table but you will not be in jepordy if the shooter throws a seven. The cascading stradagy is one that you can employ effectively with a 6 or 8. Once the shooter has hit the six and you have been payed for it take your money and laugh. Leave the bet in place and keep it turned, "On". The next time the shooter hits a six, instead of taking the money, ask the dealer to, "Press it." On a six dollar bet he will give you back a dollar and add six dollars to your original bet. You now have $12 riding on the 6. The $12 bet is for free. You already have your original $6 back. Isn't craps fun? If the six comes up again you can take the pay off of $14 and still leave the $12 bet in play or tell him to press it and play with $24 on the six. If you have a shooter that is hitting numbers you can make a lot more money on these bets than on the pass line.
If the shooter makes his point the dealer will pay you off on your come line bet but leave your 6 and 8 up but turned off for the next come out roll.
The above also applies to the 8.
